Players and lovers of music will find happiness at St Aloysius’
Music at the College provides varied and exciting performance opportunities both within the curriculum and as a co-curricular activity. We have a wide range of vocal and instrumental ensembles as well as a program of bands and orchestras. Rehearsals are held before or after school and at lunchtimes. Private tuition in music is available through a large number of tutors who visit the College. Fees are payable for private tuition.
Music performance forms a very special part of the St Aloysius’ College community. Performance and instrumental music attracts the largest number of students in the co-curricular program.
St Aloysius’ College students are offered a range of learning experiences in music performance, from individual tuition and classroom music to massed choirs and orchestras.
Students participate in liturgies, international performance tours, major concerts in Sydney’s premiere performance spaces and the biennial staging of full-scale musical productions.
As a co-curricular activity, students are expected to commit to their selected ensemble, just as for any team activity. There are a large number of ensembles, to suit multiple levels of experience and interest:
- Symphony Orchestra
- Symphonic Wind Ensemble – Advanced
- Concert Band – Intermediate
- String Orchestra
- Chamber Choir – Years 10 – 12
- Stage Band
- Saxophone Quartet
- Flute Ensemble
- French Horn Ensemble
- Oboe Ensemble
- Percussion Ensemble
- Brass Ensemble
- Jazz Ensemble(s)
- Rock Ensemble(s)
- Acoustic Guitar Ensemble
The co-curricular performance program demands the same discipline from the students as for any other team activity, with regular independent practice and attendance at all rehearsals being a fundamental requirement. The students’ experiences of in-house music camps, concerts, international tours, performing arts competitions, collaborations with other schools and formal liturgies make the effort more than worthwhile.
